Goals Of Treatment

Epidural Injection

Epidural InjectionEpidural injections are a very common treatment for neck, back and extremity pain.

Back problems have become one of the most common medical conditions in our society today. Approximately 80 percent of adults will experience back pain at some point in their lives. Often back pain results in lost or low work productivity, loss of ones active lifestyle, and it can ultimately lead to chronic pain and disability.

Conservative therapy (Medication, Physical Therapy, Chiropractic, Acupuncture and Trigger Point injections) may help to relieve your pain, but some patients continue with severe pain that requires the care of a Pain Management Specialist.

The Epidural space is an area of the spine where the nerves from the spinal cord pass through on the way to their place in the body (ex., to thigh, shin, toe etc). Disc Disease, Spinal Stenosis, Epidural Fibrosis, Post-Laminectomy Syndrome or other specific diagnoses of problems in the back, may cause Epidural inflammation and pain.

Epidural injections with local anesthetics and light steroid medications can reduce inflammation, restore normal size of Epidural nerves, wash out the build up of (noxious) chemicals (ex. from ruptured disc) and thus eliminate the pain.

Sometimes just breaking the cycle of the pain will reset those painful nerves to a more normal function, thus allowing you more freedom from discomfort and will allow you to better perform your activities of daily living.

The injection is minimally uncomfortable and is very well tolerated by almost all patients. Your doctor will administer sedation and carefully numb the area of injection for your comfort. Complications are extremely rare but can occur; you may wish to discuss this with your doctor in more detail.

Our pain doctors are highly trained and experienced to assure the greatest safety. Your doctor will recommend the most logical treatments to find the source and relieve your pain. You may do well with 1-2 injections but some patients will require a series of 3-4 injections and if successful may need occasional boosters injections depending on your diagnosis and pain level.

Your Doctor and his staff will provide the best care for you!
